Wednesday in Wyoming - November 4, 2026

tree in middle of Interstate 80
Since this is the month when we traditionally give thanks, my posts this month will feature aspects of Wyoming for which I'm thankful.

Tree Rock, which is located in the middle of Interstate 80 as it approaches the highest point on the highway, is something that makes me smile and give thanks.

My first thanks are to the men from the Union Pacific Railroad who were building the Transcontinental Railroad in 1867 and who diverted from the original plan for the tracks so that the tree could remain.

Secondly, I give thanks to the 19th century locomotive firemen who, once the railroad was complete, stopped to give this tree a drink when their trains passed it and to motorists who followed their example when the railroad was moved and replaced by the Lincoln Highway.

This stunted and twisted tree is a symbol of the effects of kindness.
